WHY THIS PART FAILS AND HOW THIS KIT SOLVES IT

The E46's door lock cylinder relies on small die-cast cams to translate the key's rotation into the lock linkage, and years of use, frost and forced turns fatigue the castings until one cracks — the classic symptoms are a key that suddenly spins freely, sticks halfway or unlocks in only one direction. BMW sells the remedy only as a complete lock assembly requiring new keys. This kit rebuilds your existing cylinder with new Zamak components, so the repair keeps your original key and costs a fraction of the assembly.

WHAT TO CHECK BEFORE PURCHASE

This kit fits the FRONT doors (left or right) of the 3 Series E46 saloon, coupe, touring, compact and convertible and uses the 45 mm barrel — measure or compare your original barrel before ordering, as other BMW models use different barrel lengths and internal layouts that this kit does not fit. BMW revised the lock catch during E46 production (factory reference 51217019974 from mid-2000), so compare the cam and clamp shapes with your originals during disassembly. The kit reuses your original key and tumbler pack; if the key is badly worn or the tumblers damaged, the rebuilt lock may remain stiff.

PROFESSIONAL INSTALLATION NOTES

Remove the door card and extract the lock cylinder from the door handle assembly, then photograph the tumbler pack and spring positions before opening the barrel — the tumblers must return in their exact original order for the key to work. Transfer the tumblers into the new barrel one by one, fit the new cams, clamps and return spring, and grease the mechanism lightly with graphite or lock-specific lubricant rather than oil. Test the key through full lock and unlock cycles with the cylinder in hand before refitting it to the door, and confirm smooth operation from outside before closing the door for the first time.
