WHY THE ORIGINAL GEARS FAIL AND HOW THIS SET FIXES THEM

The Astra TwinTop roof is a sequence of motors and latches that must all report success before the next step is allowed, and the parcel shelf motors are among the hardest working: they lift the whole rear shelf against its springs every time the roof moves, in short, high-torque bursts. The original drive gear inside each motor's gearbox is the weak point; the teeth wear until they skip under load and finally strip completely, often after the shelf has been slightly obstructed by luggage or the mechanism has stiffened with age, and because both motors share every cycle the second gear rarely lasts long after the first. From then on a motor is heard running while nothing moves, the roof stops mid-cycle and the driver is left with a warning message and a roof that will not lock. These gears are machined from steel with a yellow zinc finish, so the teeth keep their profile under the torque that destroys the originals, and the supplied washers and grease allow both gearboxes to be rebuilt to the correct end float and lubrication in one job.

WHAT TO CHECK BEFORE YOU BUY

Confirm the failure is in the parcel shelf motors and not elsewhere in the roof system: with the ignition on and the roof switch operated, a stripped gear produces the sound of the motor turning freely while the shelf stays still. Remove the motor and compare the old gear with the photos, checking the number of teeth, the square drive at the top of the shaft and the length from the gear face to the shaft end, because the TwinTop uses several motors with similar but not identical gears. The two gears in this set are identical and fit either the left or right motor. The referenced numbers are motor assembly numbers rather than gear numbers, so the physical comparison is the deciding check. If a motor's windings smell burnt or its gearbox housing is cracked, plan for a complete motor instead.

PROFESSIONAL INSTALLATION NOTES

Put the roof into a safe position, disconnect the battery and remove the trim to reach the parcel shelf motors, then unplug each and unbolt it from its bracket, working one side at a time. On the bench, open the gearbox housing, lift out the worm and the old gear, and clean out all old grease and the fragments of stripped teeth, which will otherwise jam the new gear. Press the new gear onto the shaft with the shim washer in the same position as the original, coat the teeth and worm with the supplied grease, close the housing and turn the shaft by hand to check for smooth engagement. Refit both motors, reconnect the battery and run the roof through a complete open and close cycle, following the vehicle's roof initialisation procedure if a fault message remains.
