WHY THE ORIGINAL WASHER JETS FAIL

A washer jet spends decades exposed to sunlight, frost and whatever is in the washer bottle, and on cars of this age all three have had time to do their work. The orifice gradually narrows as mineral scale and screenwash additives build up inside it, so the spray weakens to a dribble or splits into an uneven fan that misses the swept area. At the same time the plastic body embrittles, and the hose elbow is where it usually gives way, cracking under the load of pushing the hose on or simply splitting with age and leaking pressure before the fluid ever reaches the glass. Replacing both jets restores full pump pressure at the nozzle and a spray pattern that lands where the wipers actually clear.

WHAT TO CHECK BEFORE YOU BUY

Check first whether the fault is really the jet: if both sides are weak at once, the pump, the filter in the bottle or a split hose under the bonnet is the more likely cause, and new nozzles will not fix it. Compare the elbow connector on your old jet with the replacement for hose barb diameter and elbow angle, and confirm the panel aperture matches, since these cars were built over a long production run. Match the OE number where the moulding is still legible. There is no need to match the colour, as it has no effect on fitment or spray performance.

PROFESSIONAL INSTALLATION NOTES

Work from under the bonnet with it propped open, and have a cloth ready because the hose will hold fluid. Ease the hose off the old elbow rather than pulling hard, as a brittle original will often shear and leave the barb inside the hose, then release the retaining clips and push the jet out from beneath rather than levering on the painted panel. Fit the new jet until the clips seat fully, push the hose on squarely and check it is fully home on the barb. Finish by running the washers with the engine on and the wipers working, then set the aim with a fine pin so each jet lands in the upper third of its own wiper sweep, and recheck at road speed, since airflow pushes the spray lower than it appears when stationary.
