WHY THE REAR QUARTER REGULATOR FAILS

The rear quarter windows on the first-generation Continental GT and GTC drop slightly every time a door opens and lift again when it closes, so the regulator cycles far more often than an ordinary rear window. Over time the cable frays at the drum, the plastic drum and pulleys crack, and the carrier clip breaks. The glass then sags, sticks halfway, moves unevenly or the motor runs with a grinding noise while the glass stays put. Bentley only supplies the regulator as a complete unit with motor under OE 3W0839397 (latest suffix N); this kit replaces just the worn parts so the original motor and rail can be reused.

CHECK BEFORE YOU BUY

This kit is for the rear left quarter window of the first-generation car only. Confirm that the original regulator carries an OE number from the 3W0839397 series (3W0839397 to 3W0839397N); later units numbered 3W8839397 are not confirmed for this kit. Compare the drum, pulley and carrier with the old parts before dismantling further, and check that the motor still turns freely; a failed motor must be replaced separately. Colour may vary by production batch and does not affect fitment or performance.

PROFESSIONAL INSTALLATION NOTES

Disconnect the battery, remove the rear side trim panel and support the glass before releasing it from the carrier. Remove the regulator, unbolt the motor and photograph the cable routing before taking it apart. Fit the new drum, pulleys, corner pulley and carrier, wind the cables in the original direction and pre-tension them with the springs. Grease the rail and pulleys with a white lithium grease, refit the motor and glass, and adjust the glass to the roof seal. Re-initialise the window end positions after installation so the short-drop function and the roof sequence on the GTC work correctly.
