WHY THE WINDOW SWITCH CAP FAILS

The window switch caps on the BMW E39 and E38 are pressed and pulled many thousands of times, and after years of use the plastic clips crack, the cap works loose or falls off, and the up and down symbols wear away. The electrical switch underneath often still works, but it is awkward to use and looks worn. This ABS replacement cap restores a firm switch feel and clear markings without replacing the complete switch unit.

WHAT TO CHECK BEFORE YOU BUY

This cap fits the window lifter switch with genuine BMW number 61318368974 (also earlier 61318368932 and 61318352148) and the E39 driver's door switch unit 61316904309 / 61316904306; check the number on the back of your switch if possible. It is a single cap, so order one for each damaged switch. If the window does not move when the switch rocker is pressed directly, the fault is in the switch contacts, wiring or window regulator, not the cap. Colour may vary by production batch and does not affect fitment or performance.

PROFESSIONAL INSTALLATION NOTES

Switch off the ignition and lift the switch out of the door trim or console with a plastic trim tool, then unplug it if needed. Ease the old cap off the rocker evenly so the rocker pivot is not damaged, and remove any broken plastic. Align the new cap with the rocker, with the down arrow at the bottom, and press it on until it clicks into place. Reconnect and refit the switch, then test the window up and down, including the one-touch function where fitted.
